For the 2024-2025 school year I’m offering both online and in-person visits. I love meeting kids in person. But I know that online visits offer schools much-needed flexibility. All my presentations are highly interactive.
Some of my presentations are listed below, but I’m happy to adjust to meet your curricular needs. My presentations are aligned with Common Core and National Council of Social Studies standards.
Presentation: All True and All Done! How to Write a Nonfiction Book
Gr 1-6; 45 min (including time for questions)
A highly interactive presentation about the process of writing a nonfiction book. The presentation covers getting ideas, researching, writing, revising in conference (with friends, teachers, editors), and sharing good writing. The online format allows me to give kids an up-close look at props related to my process. Kids remain engaged throughout as they try experiments and answer questions. My goal is to provide vivid descriptions and mnemonics that teachers can call back to throughout the year as they guide kids through the writing process.
Writing Workshops
Gr 2-8; 45-60 min
In writing workshops, I explore a principle of writing and guide students through writing exercises practicing the principle. I can tailor the workshop to your needs. Some workshops I have taught:
- Writing Powerful Introductory Hooks
- Showing, Not Telling
- Finding the Main Point
- Using Vivid Sensory Details
- Digging into Primary Sources (a social studies workshop where kids walk through the process of getting information from non-textual primary sources, like photographs)
Presentation: Real or Pretend? Digging up Dinosaurs
Gr PreK-K, 30 min
I explore the difference between fiction and nonfiction by examining my critically-acclaimed dinosaur series where the narrator uses a time machine to visit dinosaurs and learn natural history facts about them. We’ll share dinosaur facts, move around, and laugh in this highly interactive presentation.
SCHOOL VISITS WITH FRIENDS
One of the unexpected boons of shifting all my presentations to a virtual format is that I can now partner with friends who live in farflung places to bring kids an even richer interactive experience.
Presentation: Everyone Matters
Gr K-8; 45-60 min (including time for questions)
Jennifer Keelan-Chaffins, the subject of the biography of All the Way to the Top, present together to kids. We help kids define “accessibility” and show what it means in Jennifer’s day-to-day life with a service dog and a motorized wheelchair. We do an interactive reading of All the Way to the Top, focusing on how kids can make a difference.
Workshop: Write and Draw with Us
Gr 1-6; 45 min
In this workshop illustrator Nabi Ali and I lead children through the process of writing and illustrating a personal narrative. Kids will, in the course of the workshop, write a paragraph of personal narrative with rich sensory detail. Nabi will teach kids how to draw expressive faces.
