The Brilliant Deep: Rebuilding the World’s Coral Reefs by Kate Messner is a beautiful book about one man’s commitment to restoring imperiled coral reefs. It follows Ken Nedimyer through his growing passion for the ocean and his commitment to improving its ecology. It’s a hopeful book about the ways humans can work to reverse damage wrought by humans. I loved the ending: “It starts with one.”
It’s also a great summertime book for those lucky enough to get beachtime this summer. It would pair well with other beach and ocean books:
Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the World’s Most Fearless Scientist by Jess Keating
Solving the Puzzle Under the Sea: Marie Tharp Maps the Ocean Floor by Robert Burleigh
Tia Isa Wants a Car by Meg Medina
High Tide for Horseshoe Crabs by Lisa Kahn Schnell
Astronaut-Aquanaut: How Space Science and Sea Science Interact by Jen Swanson
Happy summer!
The illustrations were just beautiful! I think it would pair well in an environment unit. Or if students were looking at how to make a difference.
